Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background in interior design? What inspired you to become interior designer, and what led you to establish your own firm in Nashville?
Elizabeth Burch Interiors is a Nashville-based full service interior design firm. A lover of design from a young age, Elizabeth has developed a reputation for creating bold, eye-catching designs. As the owner and founder of your design firm, what principles or values do you prioritize when approaching a new project?
In order to create meaningful, inspiring and functional interiors for my clients, I always adhere to following principles and values when beginning a new project. My projects are first and foremost client-centric. I prioritize understanding the needs, preferences, and lifestyle of my clients and aim to create spaces that reflect the client's personality and fulfill their functional requirements. Attention to detail is also an important principle. I pay close attention to every aspect of a space, from the choice of materials and colors to the placement of accessories. Attention to detail ensures a cohesive and polished final result. Finally, I seek to innovate and think outside the box to create unique and inspiring spaces. I stay updated on current trends but also strive to push boundaries and create timeless designs.
What are some common do's and don'ts that homeowners should keep in mind when designing their houses, particularly in a city like Nashville with its unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles?
Do prioritize comfort: Comfort should be a top priority. Choose furniture and accessories that are both stylish and comfortable. Do use lighting thoughtfully: Lighting can significantly impact the mood and ambiance of a space. Incorporate a mix of natural and artificial lighting sources for a well-lit and inviting atmosphere. Do Pay Attention to Scale and Proportion: Choose furniture and décor items that are proportionate to the size of the room. Avoid overcrowding or under-furnishing a space.
Could you share some insights into the latest trends in interior design that you've observed, especially those relevant to Nashville's cultural and architectural landscape?
Interior design trends are always evolving, influenced by factors such as culture, technology, and lifestyle changes. Here are some current interior design trends that I've noticed lately:
- Incorporating curved lines and organic shapes in furniture and decor to add visual interest and softness to spaces.
- Designing versatile living areas that can adapt to different activities and functions, such as home offices, workout areas, and relaxation zones.
- Rediscovering and repurposing vintage furniture and decor pieces, as well as embracing retro-inspired design elements like bold wallpapers and statement lighting.
What are some of the most significant challenges or difficulties you face as an interior designer working in Nashville, and how do you overcome them?
A challenge that I face as a designer in Nashville can be space limitations. In Nashville, we hope to preserve older homes and restore them to their original glory. This can come with space limitations. Designing for small or awkwardly shaped spaces presents unique challenges in maximizing functionality and visual appeal while avoiding overcrowding or clutter.
When is the best time for homeowners to involve an interior designer in their project? Are there specific stages of the design process where your expertise is particularly valuable?
The best time to include an interior designer in a project is at the very beginning! Often it is best for the designer to come on board prior to an architect or general contractor. That way, the designer is involved in space planning and the selections of finishes.
How do you balance the client's vision and preferences with your professional expertise and design recommendations?
I try to balance client expectations and my own creative expertise by setting realistic expectations from the beginning. I manage client's expectations by setting realistic timelines, budgets, and goals for the project. I try to clearly communicate what can be achieved within the given constraints and provide alternatives or compromises when necessary. I'm also transparent about any limitations or challenges that may arise during the design process.
Can you share a particularly memorable or rewarding project you've worked on in Nashville, and what made it stand out to you?
I have a lot of favorite projects to date, but a recent one stands out. We completed a renovation of the kitchen, breakfast nook, mudroom and upstairs bathroom while also furnishing the living and dining room. This project was in Sylvan Park, one of our favorite Nashville neighborhoods.
In your experience, what are some essential factors for creating a cohesive and visually appealing interior design scheme, especially in homes with diverse architectural styles?
First and foremost, respect the architectural details such as arches, exposed beams, moldings or columns. I always try to incorporate these features instead of trying to mask them. Another essential factor in creating a cohesive design scheme is blending traditional and contemporary design elements to create a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. We love to mix vintage or antique pieces with modern furnishings and decor for a dynamic and layered look.
